The creation of figurative cave painting is a milestone in human experience; the Chauvet Cave is one of the best-preserved painted caves as well as the oldest, with sections dating back 37,000 years, when two races of humans, Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, still lived in proximity to each other. Learn more about the cave, the techniques of its production, and the culture that produced this foundational site of figurative art during a visit to the Grotte Chauvet 2, where a reproduction allows students to experience the cave paintings as those early modern humans would have. That afternoon and evening, visit a vineyard and have dinner at a table d鈥檋ote, savoring local gastronomy and learning about local wine-making and truffle hunting. The following day, don harnesses and helmets to explore a real, natural cave to understand what it actually meant for an early human to adventure into a limestone cavern to create such works.

Payment for study trips must be made no later than January 31 for the Spring 2020 semester. Any concerns in this regard should be addressed to the Cultural Program & Student Accounting Services.

Study trip payments can be sent the same way as tuition: online by credit card on my.aup.edu/payment/tuition, via bank transfer, or in person with cash/check.
