International Research Workshop: Early Holocaust Remembrance in the Jewish Press, from the Second World War to the 1960s

The Schaeffer Center (Q-709) | 6, rue du Colonel Combes
Monday, November 25, 2019 - 10:10

Scholarly works dealing with early Jewish remembrance of the Holocaust have mainly focused on documentation efforts, historiographical writings, testimonies,泭Yisker-books, commemorations, and monuments, among other topics. In such works, the Jewish press has been extensively mobilized by scholars as a privileged source of information on communal initiatives and perspectives.泭Indeed, as means for the泭circulation of泭information on Jewish persecutions since the very moment when thesewere taking place, Jewish journals泭have also become important vehicles for泭the泭spreading泭of泭knowledge on the Holocaust in the early postwar years. Nonetheless, if the relevance of the Jewish press as a historical source has been widely acknowledged, this media still needs to be approached as a subject of泭study in itself, alongside泭with泭other commemorative endeavors.泭

By泭transmitting泭a great variety of Holocaust writings in the early postwar years, the Jewish press has significantly shaped the understanding of the Jewish past within the communities it was addressed tothrough its泭major informative and commemorative role. Moreover, editors and journalists of the Jewish press worldwide very often adopted positions of their own with respect to the meanings of the past expressed in their writings. Hence, this workshop regards Jewish journals as vehicles for early Holocaust memory, and simultaneously as institutional actors with their own memorial agendas.泭

Questions泭proposed to be addressed by participants in their泭papers:泭

  • What were泭the泭continuities泭or differences泭between泭the wartime Jewish press (a free one in countries spared by Nazi occupation and a clandestine one in Nazi-occupied Europe)泭and泭the postwar Jewish press?泭

  • Which topics related to the Holocaust泭have泭circulated in the Jewish press?泭

  • What泭kind/genre泭of texts were泭published?泭(Testimonies? Historical泭writings?泭Fiction? Poetry?News?泭Opinion?)泭

  • What泭were the specificities泭of泭the泭treatment of the Holocaust泭in泭the Jewish press, compared to泭books?泭

  • Which audience did the Jewish press reach泭to,泭compared to other printed materials?泭

  • Who wrote泭about the Holocaust in the Jewish press?泭Was the readership involved in泭the elaboration of Holocaust memory?泭

  • What was the editorial泭position泭of the journal(s)泭under consideration? Were there contesting visions within the same journal?泭

  • Was there a dialogue泭between the泭Jewish泭press and other泭Jewish or non-Jewish泭media?泭泭

  • How have泭images泭printed泭in the Jewish press泭(pictures, drawings, cartoons)泭contributed to泭the construction of a泭Holocaust泭visual culture?泭

  • To what extent泭was泭the Jewish press泭transnational?泭For instance, can we speak of the Yiddish press as being always transnational?泭

  • What were the particularities of Holocaust writings circulating in the Jewish press in languages other than Yiddish? Was the Jewish press able to reach a non-Jewish audience泭by using non-Jewish languages?泭

  • How泭can we appeal to泭quantitative methods to study the place and evolution of the Holocaust as a topic in the Jewish泭press?泭
