During the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) Germany experienced the backsliding and collapse of its democratic system, giving rise to the authoritarian regime of Nazi Germanys Third Reich (1933-1945). On this trip we will study Germanys democratic erosion through the lens of the cultural, economic, and political conditions present in Munich, Bavarias capital as well the initial center of the Nazi movement. We will follow the traces of the citys darkest period by visiting sites such as those of the former headquarter of the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP), the beer halls in which masses were mobilized for Hitlers 1924 putsch attempt, and the concentration camp in Dachau.
