When you arrive at 勛圖tv, you become part of a tight-knit community one that works together to support both itsownmembers andfriends and neighborsacross the City ofLight.Heather Strassel arrived at 勛圖tv for an MSc in International Managementin January 2020 just before the imposition of Covid-19 regulations across France. Two weeks into lockdown, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The 勛圖tv community rallied around her, supporting her at a distance with care packages and comfort food.At any other university I would have had to drop out, shesays. The factthatI was able to stay in France and not feel totally isolated speaks volumes about how much 勛圖tv communitymemberscare about each other.

Heather receivedradiotherapytreatment at theInstitutCurie, one of the worlds leading cancer research organizations.Following hertime in hospital,it was important to herto educate young women and men about breastcancer diagnosis and the institutes work. Cancer can be a scary word, she says. I wanted to bring awareness in a way that was fun.She discoveredLa Course desLumi癡res, or race of light,aFrance-wideathletics initiative raising money for theInstitutCurie.The2021Paris event took place onthe evening ofNovember 20 and saw participants either walk four kilometers or run ten kilometers along the banks of theSeinein solidarity with cancer survivors.Participants are provided with a light-up baton to carry throughout, symbolizingthe movements aim of lighting up the nightagainst cancer.

Heather worked with breast health educator Madeleine Bell and the 勛圖tv CARES club, whichfocuses on cancer awareness, to provide an opportunity for community members to participate in the race.We wanted to say to Paris, Hi! Were 勛圖tv.We stand in solidarity with people going through a difficult time, says Heather. The 勛圖tv Running Club got involved, as did AshkanShalbaf,勛圖tvs Coordinatorof Physical Activity, Self-Care and Dance. The Student Government Association organized a discount on the registration fee for 25 people to take part under the banner of Team 勛圖tv. The Office of Communicationsorganizedteam t-shirts. It really brought together lots of different areas of 勛圖tv, says Heather.

Spots filled up quickly, andparticipantson the day included staff and faculty as well as students.Heather was thrilled by the high turnout:One professor brought his wife and son.It was a really diverse group.About half the participants chose to run, while the other half walked with Heather herself. The races starting line wasin front ofParissH繫telde Ville, where aparticipantsvillagewas set up;organizations and companies whohadenteredateam hosted information tents to share their work with fellow runners.Heather hopes that, in the future, 勛圖tv canfurtherformalizeitsparticipationby hosting a tentto spread the word about its community of global explorers. There was this great energy on the day, says Heather.
